PROJECT:
Potter Elementary School - Tampa , Florida
CLIENT:
School District of Hillsborough County
ARCHITECTURAL FIRM OF RECORD:
Rowe Architects Incorporated
PROJECT SUMMARY:
This project included a total upgrade of mechanical electrical, and communication systems to a forty year old elementary school. Program included the addition of six intermediate classrooms and a new media center. The resultant design extends the existing finger plan and respects the original campus plan of the school.
The media center takes advantage of an existing large oak tree which helps define an outer extension of the reading room. The placement of the Media Center reinforces its prominence by becoming the "heart" of the school. The existing Media Center is remodeled to serve as instructional space. The additional classrooms are single loaded along an exterior walkway that shades the south side of the classroom and allows for the introduction of north light into the classrooms. The design embraces the notion of encouraging outdoor instruction by creating outdoor "learning areas" defined by the built form.
Site improvements include extended parking areas, a better defined and safer pick up and drop off area for the children and drainage improvements.
